Sunward Drift
The power of the sun has long been described in ancient literature, yet never have we felt the consuming woe released from this celestial body as profoundly as we do today. As global warming accelerates at an unprecedented rate, widespread and rapid changes have unfolded across the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, and biosphere.
We witness forests disappearing under extreme drought, groaning toward death in wildfires. We see birds forced to alter their migration routes, only to edge ever closer to extinction. We witness melting glaciers, intensifying storms, and rising seas. Even our own lives are increasingly at risk. Through our relentless impact on the climate, we are unconsciously drawing ourselves closer to the sun, summoning the future that awaits us.
Sunward Drift is a 3D video installation that poetically weaves together these alarming climate scenarios, echoing Ovid's words within a contemporary context. By tracing a gradual journey toward the sun, the work reflects on the fragile interconnectedness of our ecosystem and the unsettling reality toward which we are drifting. Rather than offering an apocalyptic vision, it is an urgent call to awareness: that we might still reverse our sunward drift, confront the crisis we have created, and reconsider our collective responsibility to build a more sustainable future.
